Estrogen: The feminine hormone

Human body has an endocrine system, which is system of glands; each gland secretes a type of hormone directly into the bloodstream to regulate the body there are two kinds of hormones. Hormones represent specific proteins produced by the human endocrine organs pituitary, adrenals, thyroid, testes, and ovaries, these entire hormone system plays crucial role in the physiologic processes that maintain homeostasis. They play roles in such diverse processes as growth, cell repair, appetite, metabolism, fertility, reproduction, and regulation of pain. Hormones are powerful substances that control multiple functions throughout the body. Hormone levels should be sufficient and balanced.

Estrogen is female steroid sex hormones that are secreted by the ovary and responsible for typical female sexual characteristics, Existence of three true end-organ sex hormones: estrogen, progesterone, and testosterone play vital role in both men and women reproductive system. This continuing communication takes place between the brain, the ovaries, and the adrenal glands, acting in performance with all your other bodily systems. If ovulation does not occur in a woman because of very low estrogen levels that means ovaries are incapable of releasing eggs. During the reproductive years, the pituitary gland in the brain generates hormones that cause a new egg to be released from its follicle each month. As the follicle develops, it produces estrogen, which causes the lining of the uterus to thicken. The hormonal imbalance in women can indicate any one of the conditions of menopause pre-menopause and post-menopause.

Estrogen dominance and hormonal imbalance is not limited to women. Estrogen is most likely widely known of all hormones. Estrogen is regulating many of body’s functions. Estrogen controls growth of the uterine lining during the first part of the menstrual cycle, causes changes in the breasts during adolescence and pregnancy and regulates various other metabolic processes, including bone growth and cholesterol levels. Estrogen produced by the ovaries helps prevent bone loss and works together with calcium, vitamin D and other hormones and minerals to build bones. A healthy woman’s body maintains appropriate ratios of estrogens, progesterone, and testosterone throughout life.

Estrogen is a vital hormone which helps in woman’s reproductive process. Its function is to regulate the menstrual cycle and prepares the women’s uterus for pregnancy by enhancing and thickening the endometrium. The luteinizing hormone and the follicle stimulating hormone are the two necessary hormones which control the body how to produce estrogen in women who ovulate.

Estrogen hormone intake is properly done under the hormone replacement therapy where in women with removed ovaries are given estrogen only while all other are provided with the combined dosage of estrogen and progesterone in. The reason for using this combination is that estrogen alone affects the endometrial lining of uterus and progesterone helps in protecting its thickness and also prevents to develop cancer in the uterus. But it is an important consideration that estrogen treatments also has different side effects of which the most common is the development of endometrial or breast cancer. But it is evident with the research that these side effects are associated with long term treatment.
